Ok, I thought this was as good a topic as any to post this under...

I have been very involved with this site at a personal level for sometime now, so in saying that, I figure I should share my negative experiences right alongside my positive ones. I want people to realize that sometimes this business can be most hurtful, as well as most exciting!

Because Andrew has been recently booked a photoshoot with "Checker Auto Parts", this occurance didn't bother me as much as it would have if we had nothing to be excited about.

Yesterday I submitted Andrew for a short film that would be filming here in Phoenix, it was for a company called, "Fallen Film". I received an email back from them....once I read it I realized that whoever sent it obviously did not mean to send it to me but must have accidentally. This is what it said,

I don't like his look. But we should contact them anyway.

I was just insulted! I was like how rude can you get!!! I replied to them with this,

Thank you for your reply, as rude as it may have been. I appreciate your response.

I got a glimpse of how this business is on the inside. Talent is looked at and discarded, or looked at and chosen. Quite as simple as that! Andrew just didn't have "the look", and even though it was totally insulting to me, it was just the cold hard facts!

I really wanted to share this in hopes that the lady who was posting about trying to find an agent for her young daughter and getting rejected,  would read this. I wanted her to realize that sometimes, even though our kids are cute and handsome, etc, etc, etc, sometimes they just don't have "the look" Casting Director's or agents want...Don't give up on finding your daughter an agent, you will. An agent may not like her look, the next one may absolutely love her. You just never know.

Sarah,
Too bad about the casting director's comment-they don't know what they past up!!
But, unfortunatly, it is the way this business works. I have run into the same situations with Kelsea. I had a casting director tell me too my face that "while she is very pretty-we want someone else who is not her". I don't think they meant it exactly as said-but the point was received.

It is too bad that it has to be this way...it can be very hurtful! Hopefully, everyone realizes that rejection is just part and parcel of this business and you just have to keep plugging away at it.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Hi Sarah,

Rejection is a tough thing to accept. As a casting director, I too have had to determine which talent have what the project calls for.

I first went by the "look or type" and then i had to determine if the person could pull of the role. I cannot count how many times i located the right "Look" only to be disappointed that the person could not act and no matter how perfect they looked, we could not use them.

It is a fact that you have to have the look the project calls for. When casting personnel is seeking talent, many are furnished with a breakdown that detail specific looks even down to the hair color, this is profiling and what the director, writer and a multitude of others have envisioned for the role

It was unfortunate that you were sent the email in error and had to see the inner workings of the way things are dealt with. You might want to consider this as a learning experience.

Use this to understand the meaning of versatility. The more "LOOKS/TYPES" you can achieve will improve your chances of an audition.

When i dealt with talent to prepare them for materials, i would instruct them to study and research the "TYPES/LOOKS" they could achieve. i.e. an all American school kid, a rapper, a homeless person, a computer geek, a gangster, a jock, a tough kid, a skateboarder and the list goes on.

Then the next step was to take photographs attempting to capture the Character. This helps when submitting for roles. You can submit the photos that are closer to the type they are seeking. Versatility and characterization is an IMPORTANT part of your portfolio and many times will improve your chances for an audition just based on the photograph.

You might also what to consider that in the email you were sent they were still thinking that they may still see Andrew in the hopes he could pull off the role.

Don't take it personal, it is their job and they are only doing what they think is best, however how tactless they seem. Their job is to find the right person and believe me they want to find the right person for the part ASAP.

Many times you are subject to personal opinions and that too is the hardest thing to overcome. Again, increase your chances by submitting photos as close as you can to the roles you are submitting for.

Hope this helps you understand that it is not something that is set up to hurt you. It is just how the business works as well as to try and cast a believable character.

Oh believe me, I was not hurt, ,lol. I thought it was humorous that they sent me that email by mistake. I was a bit insulted at first that "My handsome Andrew" didn't fit the role, lmao , but that's how the wheel turns....

My whole point in posting this experience, is to let members and anyone who reads this know that if you don't have the right "look" be ready for the rejection. It is a cruel hard fact actors need to accept as a part of the business.

I hope that maybe someone who reads this will know that ALL actors, even if they have had ALOT of success also face rejection. It's just part of the business folks!
